According to recent statistics, there were 124.7 million iPhone users in the US in 2022. This is 7.2% more than 2021’s 116.3 million and is one of the biggest annual increases in recent years.
Analysts attribute the large rise to Apple cutting prices on some of its older models, which spurred sales, and the government’s ban on rival brand Huawei.

The number of iPhone users in the US has been growing year after year for at least a decade. In 2012, there were 44.53 million iPhone users—around one-third of the current figure. By 2016, this had more than doubled, to 90.1 million, and two years later, the number of iPhone users in the US surpassed 100 million for the very first time.
How many Americans own iPhones: 2012–2022 growth
From 2012 to 2022, the number of iPhone users in the US increased by 80.17 million. This marks a 180% overall increase and an average annual growth rate of 11.2%.
However, growth has slowed in recent years. From 2013 to 2015, annual growth rates were in double digits, and averaged 23%. But from 2016 to 2022, the average annual growth rate decelerated nearly fourfold, to 6.1%.
The largest annual increase in the number of iPhone users in the US came in 2013, when it was still a fairly new product. That year, the figure grew by 29.8%. In contrast, the smallest increase, which was registered in 2021, was 2.5%.
Despite the recent slowdown, Apple remains the most popular smartphone brand in the US by a large margin. It has a market share of over 50%, which means that more than half of all smartphone users there own an iPhone. In comparison, its biggest competitor, Samsung, has a market share of around 30%.
